First, ask yourself how much color you’re looking for. Do you want a more mellow, sheer lip color? An average, Goldilocks amount of color? Or something extra intense and bold? This question really dictates how the lip color will interact with the rest of your makeup look and wardrobe. Do you want your lips to be a focal point, or do you want them to blend in with your look? Everyone has a different preference!

#2 What color am I looking for?
I recommend considering this question second, because some products may or may not come in the color that you’re looking for. Do you want a red? A pink? A purple? An orange? A brown? Something more specific that’s in between two or more of those hues? Use this question to narrow down the products you are considering.
It also helps if you consider your complexion, as some colors will complement your skin better than others. For example, I usually find that shades with some sort of purple aspect look good with my skin, and this influences my decisions.

#3 What kind of finish do you want?
Once you’ve narrowed down your list, consider what kind of finish would be best for you. Do you want a true matte? A satin? A glossy? Something in between?
As I answer this question, I also think about what my lips can handle. Since my lips are sensitive, A glossy or shiny finish is typically easier and more hydrating than a matte finish. How much time do you want to spend conditioning your lips before applying your lip color in the near future? Perhaps your lips can handle anything you throw their way, unlike mine.
